Hearing loss occurs in more than one way, and the right solution for improving hearing depends on the type and severity of loss. Cochlear implants are designed for a different type of hearing impairment. Hearing aids amplify sound, cochlear implants directly stimulate the auditory nerve providing sound signals to the brain. Cochlear implants are the best solution for people with damaged sensory cells in the inner ear, which causes severe to profound hearing loss.
Our patients have access to a wide selection of both cochlear implants, including Cochlear Americas and Advanced Bionics products, and bone anchored hearing implants. We also offer testing for your Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon and support after the cochlear or bone anchored hearing implant procedure.
Cochlear Implants
For people with severe to profound hearing loss in both ears, cochlear implants are the best solution to improve their hearing abilities. These electronic medical devices bypass the damaged structures within the inner ear ( known as the cochlea) in order to provide sound signals to the brain. Cochlear implants are an established and reliable treatment for people with severe hearing loss in both ears.
The benefits enjoyed thanks to cochlear implants include:
- Improved abilities for speech understanding
- Improved environmental awareness
- Improved quality of life, social interactions, and employment opportunities
We use superior cochlear implants, including those from Cochlear Americas, Advanced Bionics, and MED-EL.
Bone Anchored Hearing Implant
Also known as auditory osseointegrated devices, bone anchored implants are designed for individuals with middle ear dysfunction or single-sided deafness. These devices make use of the natural sound transmission that occurs through bones in our head. An external processor delivers sound to a tiny implant, which then transfers sound wave vibrations via bone conduction to the other, healthy inner ear. This gives the wearer the experience of full hearing.
Bone anchored implants are best for patients with any of the following conditions:
- Conductive or mixed hearing loss in one or both ears
- Chronically draining ears
- Malformed ears or ear canals
- Severe or profound hearing loss in only one ear (single-sided deafness)
We carry several options for bone anchored hearing implants, including those from Oticon Medical, Medtronic, Cochlear Americas, and Advanced Bionics.
